The last away Premier League fixture at St. James Park where they played Newcastle United, has revealed a set of solutions to fix the issue of missing one of the key players, or “The Key Player” of the last few seasons.

These solutions may be categorized as follows:

Extra player in build-up along the lower line
Back to the inverted CB for a double pivot shape
Overload of the center channel to find wide passing options
Force the opposition to press players toward the center channel
Longer passes to target players

In this video I attempted to visualize what I think the coach is trying to do; as there isn’t any substitution on the back like the Spaniard, then the shape and the pattern of play have been tailored to the available players, proving that once again the tactical mind of one of the greatest in football history.
